…for a better Lesotho

AS the 2025/2026 tax filing season enters its second month, Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) is urging citizens to view tax compliance as a patriotic duty that directly supports the country’s survival and growth.
Under the theme “File and pay your tax obligations for a better Lesotho,” RSL has said every cent collected contributes to building a more affordable and stable nation.
The authority stressed that filing tax returns enabled the government to meet its commitment to shield households from global economic shocks.
Speaking at the filing season activation at Makoanyane Square on Friday, RSL Deputy Commissioner for Digital Services, Tšepo Raletooane, said tax compliance equipped government with the financial capacity to subsidise essential goods and services, ensuring basic needs remained accessible to all Basotho.
Mr Raletooane said timely filing and payment contributed to price stability by supporting subsidies on key food items to counter inflation. He added that tax revenue also strengthened healthcare and education by supporting the revival of vocational schools and improving health facilities.
“Tax compliance is not just about meeting a legal obligation; it is about patriotism and love for our country. The 2026 filing season is a call to action for every Mosotho. Filing your tax return is not just a legal requirement, but a meaningful investment in the growth and sovereignty of our nation,” Mr Raletooane said.
He further urged taxpayers to embrace digital platforms, noting that RSL has modernised its systems to make compliance seamless and paperless.
“Our goal is to make compliance a simple and efficient process that respects the time and effort of both businesses and individuals.”
To ease the process, RSL now allows taxpayers to settle their obligations through its e-taxation platform as well as mobile money services such as M-Pesa and EcoCash.
Also speaking at the event, RSL Senior Marketing and Client Education Officer, Mohale Motenalapi, said the filing season for individuals, companies and partnerships runs from 1 April to 30 June 2026.
He encouraged taxpayers to use the official RSL website to access guidelines and obtain e-clearance certificates, helping them avoid last-minute queues and potential penalties.
“Voluntary compliance is the cornerstone of a self-reliant Lesotho. When we all play our part, we build a more secure and prosperous future for generations to come,” Mr Motenalapi said.
“Every time you file and pay your taxes, you are doing more than meeting an obligation — you are helping to make life more affordable for yourself and every Mosotho.
“Tax compliance gives government the capacity to subsidise essential goods and services — from healthcare and education to food security and infrastructure. This translates into lower costs where it matters most and greater support for families, businesses and communities.”
He said compliance contributes to stable prices on essential goods, more affordable healthcare, improved access to education and increased support for vulnerable households.
