PRIME Minister Sam Matekane has launched a M22 million rural electrification project set to benefit the four villages of Mokema, Ha-Ramaqhanyane, Ha-Liile, and Ha-Lekete, in Maseru district.

The project will provide electricity to 744 households, two schools – Ramaqhanyane High School and Mokema Primary School, a healthcare centre, and a chief’s office.

Speaking during the launch held in Mokema, Korokoro, on Friday, Mr Matekane said 54 percent of households across the country have been electrified so far.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving livelihoods by expanding access to electricity in line with the global goal of universal access to clean energy by 2030.

“To reach this target, we will continue to financially support the Ministry of Energy with the help of our development partners,” Mr Matekane said.

“We are not only electrifying homes, but also supporting businesses and livelihoods. This reflects our unwavering commitment to transforming lives.”

He urged the community to protect and maintain the infrastructure, saying it would bring long-term benefits and create economic opportunities.

“This project cost M22,652,307.52, which means that each household was electrified at a cost of over M30,000. This is a true testament that the government is serious about delivering essential services to the people.”

He said the government’s electrification policy includes partnering with local entrepreneurs to boost job creation and skills development, helping them compete on a global scale.

“We contracted B&G Electricity Company for 11 months, and I am informed that they worked with the local community by offering temporary employment,” he said.

Mr Matekane also expressed gratitude to international development partners for their continued support.

“Your continued partnership is the reason we are here today with pride. The dream of universal access by 2030 is no longer farfetched. With commitment and collaboration, it is within our reach. I am confident that together we will achieve this dream.”
