Mzansi Magic has confirmed that The Bala Family will not return for a third season in the near future, ending months of uncertainty about the reality programme’s future.
The broadcaster said commissioning decisions are shaped by several factors, including its scheduling needs and wider programming strategy. It thanked the Bala family for allowing viewers into their lives over two seasons and said it remained committed to local stories, but did not disclose how the programme had performed with audiences.
The confirmation followed a public statement from the family, who said they had spent almost two years trying to bring the show back. They said they were ready to continue sharing their homes, relationships and music, but stressed that the decision to halt the programme was not theirs.
The family acknowledged their disappointment and apologised to viewers who had been waiting for another season. They described the series as more than a television production because it placed their private relationships, family history and musical legacy before the public.
The Bala Family debuted in 2023 and followed musicians Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo Bala, their sister Pinky, their mother Vuyiswa and members of their extended family. Its mix of music, personal conflict and reconciliation helped the programme become a regular subject of online discussion.
The family’s statement suggested that they still believe there is an audience for the series. They pointed to messages from viewers, public conversations and support at live events as evidence that the family’s story continued to resonate beyond the programme’s two seasons.
Mzansi Magic stopped short of describing the decision as a permanent cancellation. Its wording, together with the family’s statement that a third season would not happen “in the near future”, leaves open the possibility that the show could be revisited later, although no new production plan or timetable has been announced.
For now, the broadcaster and the Bala family have offered different perspectives on the same outcome: the channel says its slate is being reviewed as part of normal strategy, while the family says it was willing and prepared to return.
