THE SUN Joint Venture (JV), one of the contractors responsible for the construction of the Polihali Dam, hosted a one-day Spelling Bee Competition in Mokhotlong district on Friday.

Forty-eight Grade 11 students from 16 high schools across the Mokhotlong district participated, competing to spell words commonly used in the construction industry.

The competition was organized in collaboration with the Matla a Metsi JV, which is responsible for the design and construction supervision of the Polihali Dam.

The competition was won by Lindiwe Moshoeshoe from Sekonyela High School. Kefuoe Makoae and Lineo Napo from Seeiso High School secured the second and third positions, respectively.

The top three winners received prizes that included school bags, stationery, and sanitary towels.

Ms Moshoeshoe, who said this was her first-ever spelling competition, expressed her happiness at the achievement.

“Because I am new in this thing, I did not even practice that much. But through the help of my teachers, I was able to make it.”

Sun Le, Deputy Project Manager at SUN JV, said the construction firm hosted the Spelling Bee competition to enhance the educational experience of learners in Mokhotlong.

“Through this initiative, we aim to improve English language proficiency, with a focus on spelling accuracy, in order to advance the educational experience of the participants,” Mr Le said.

The competition, Mr Le believes, will help develop students’ public speaking confidence and expand their vocabularies, with a special emphasis on construction and engineering terminology.

Rorisang Rantsane, Environment and Social Manager at Matla a Metsi JV, described the Spelling Bee event as a success, after it attracted 48 students from 16 schools.?
