TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant, Econet Telecom Lesotho, has strengthened its network footprint in Mohale’s Hoek with the commissioning of the Motse-Mocha Base Transceiver Station (BTS), delivering enhanced connectivity to communities, businesses and institutions across the district.
The new 5G-powered site forms part of Econet’s expanding infrastructure ecosystem in the area, complementing existing sites including Maphohloane, Qalakheng, Ha Tšepo, St. Stephens, the Mohale’s Hoek Exchange and Mesitsaneng. These are further supported by a growing fibre footprint extending to Ha Tanka, Likhutlong, Qalakheng and Motse-Mocha.
The investment significantly enhances voice quality, improves high-speed data access and strengthens network reliability, positioning the district to fully participate in Lesotho’s accelerating digital transformation journey.
Communities such as Litšoeneng, Ha Sechele, Mohlakeng, Mesitsaneng, Makhaleng, Mohale’s Hoek town and Thoteng are set to benefit from faster internet speeds, improved call clarity and more dependable connectivity.
For learners and educators, the development means improved access to digital learning platforms and educational resources. For families, it enhances everyday communication, while for entrepreneurs and small businesses it unlocks opportunities to participate in the digital economy through seamless transactions, online marketing and improved customer engagement.
Speaking on the development, Econet’s Head of Planning and Projects, Leutsoa Moteka, emphasised both the importance of the investment and the shared responsibility required to protect it.
“This expansion reflects Econet Telecom Lesotho’s unwavering commitment to building a resilient, future-ready and 5G-enabled network that supports inclusive growth and Lesotho’s digital transformation agenda,” Mr Moteka said.
“However, these investments can only deliver long-term value if they are protected. Theft and vandalism of ETL’s infrastructure remain a serious challenge that disrupts connectivity, affects livelihoods and undermines national progress.”
“We therefore call on communities to work with us in safeguarding this critical infrastructure, as it is not only Econet’s asset but a shared national resource that powers communication, education, business and financial inclusion.”
Residents have welcomed the improved service. Sophia Mahlehle of Ha Sechele said stronger connectivity would make everyday communication easier and improve access to essential services such as EcoCash.
Local entrepreneur Rethabile Kolisang, owner of Kolisang Printing and Photocopying, highlighted the positive impact on business.
“Reliable connectivity is essential for us to communicate with customers, receive payments seamlessly and promote our services online,” Mr Kolisang said.
Beyond connectivity, the enhanced network also strengthens access to Econet’s broader digital ecosystem, including EcoCash for convenient financial transactions and EcoSure insurance services, further advancing financial inclusion and empowering communities.
