I was motivated by passion: Tebello ‘Lily’ Motebang

lillyHip Hop has always been predominantly viewed as a man’s world due to the hint of misogynistic expression the genre traffics in.

K.O.L’s Tebello “Lily” Motebang is among the few who are attempting to turn the tables
around in the genre’ circles.

In an interview, this pastor’s daughter who is former model tells Express People’s (EP) Mohalenyane Phakela about her career.

EP: Tell us about your profession
Lily: I am an up-coming musician — rapper, artiste manager and head publicist of K.O.L Music Productions. I have been with the company for three years now.

EP: When did you start and what motivated you to sing?
Lily: I have been singing since I could talk. But I only ventured into the professional side of music a couple of years back when I met Dunamis. I was motivated by his passion, talent
and perseverance with his music. Lesotho has a lot of talent but lacks adequate support, recognition and resources to put artistes at a deserving level.
EP: How is your career doing so far?
Lily: Things have taken a positive turn quiet beyond my expectation. I have since released two singles, getting massive recognition and I have also shot two music videos one of which is already enjoying airplay on LTV. I have two of my artistes’ music videos now playing on Channel O, which was really one of the greatest achievements for last year.

KOL has just released a Mixtape COMBO, which is doing very well. The support from fans locally and abroad is amazing and humbling.
EP: What is your most memorable milestone?
Lily: There are quiet a handful, but onethat stands out; is my first time on stage at a local Hip hop show in 2011 where I was performing alongside Dunamis and Pasco D as their lead support vocalist on their track “We Made It”. Supporting such a great person as Dunamis
was a phenomenal experience which I will cherish for life. I was on fire that night, and I surprised everyone, including myself, and thereafter I knew, There is no stopping Lily!
EP: What are your future plans?
Lily: Future plans (sighs) there are so many… K.O.L! I am building an empire here along with my team and that is already one of the biggest plans, though I cannot disclose details as yet, so you just going to have to watch and see.

My music career:
I am working towards my debut album but currently focusing on releasing music singles and music videos. I am already working on my next singlescheduled to drop this festive season.
EP: What advice can you give to people who fear for their success?
Lily: Be positive; reminding yourself continually that you are part of somethinglarger than you, 20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do, than those you did; and last but not least; for stars to shine, there must be darkness.
