MASERU — Mohale’s Hoek Horse Racing Club has received a cash injection of M35 000 ahead of its annual horse racing competitions next Sunday.
The club received the donation from the Maluti Mountain Brewery on Thursday.
Maluti Mountain Brewery (MMB) marketing manager, ‘Mampine Sekota said the donation was part of the company’s efforts to give back to the community in Mohale’s Hoek.
“Horse racing has been there in Mohale’s Hoek for the past two years and we’ve always helped them with cash,” Sekota said.
“Not all the companies do this (sponsoring tournaments) but we are always doing it because we want to give the little we collected back to the community,” she said.
Mohale’s Hoek Horse Racing Club president Elias Mokhethi promised Maluti Mountain Brewery that they were going to use the money for the intended purpose.
“This money will be used for the intended purpose only and not be used for personal gain,” Mokhethi said.
“In most cases companies shun sports associations because we fail to account for the money we receive, which is used for personal gains,” he said.
Mokhethi thanked the brewery for increasing its annual sponsorship from M30 000 to M35 000 this year.
“MMB has been sponsoring it (Horse Racing) for the past years with M30 000 with the aim to develop sport in the country.
“And with M5 000 more, we are grateful and promise to account for every single cent used,” he said.
Mokhethi however pledged with MMB to help them with gates during horse racing competitions.
“We’ve got gate problems during competitions and this is hindering the growth of the sport and causing problems among horse owners,” he said.
“With the lack of gates, some horse owners bribe the referee to raise a flag while others are not expecting so that they can win and that has caused problems.”
