A new Ebola treatment centre has opened in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of the Congo, as health authorities expand care and isolation capacity during the country’s continuing outbreak. The facility opened on Thursday, 10 September, with 22 beds and room to increase its operational capacity to 50, Africanews reported.
The centre is supported by Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders. MSF emergency coordinator Kate Nolan said accessible treatment and isolation space should help staff care for patients while reducing opportunities for the virus to spread in the community. A case was first detected in Kisangani during the current outbreak in July, making capacity in the city an important part of the response.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus. In its 10 September situation update, the World Health Organization reported 6,757 confirmed cases and 3,267 deaths in DR Congo using data through 7 September. At that point it recorded affected health zones in six provinces. Those figures are dated and should not be read as a current toll.
Subsequent reporting showed the outbreak moving farther west. On 11 September, AP reported that authorities had identified a case in Sud-Ubangi, a seventh province. Africanews also reported the expansion. The differing province counts reflect the dates of the updates, not competing descriptions of the same day.
WHO has warned that delayed detection and barriers to early care raise the risk of further transmission in households, communities and health facilities. Conflict, displacement and population movement have added pressure to the response. The Kisangani centre provides additional treatment and isolation space, while surveillance, testing and contact tracing remain central to containing the outbreak.
