South African figure skater Gian-Quen Isaacs has won the women’s title at the Diamond Spin 2026 in Katowice, Poland, after climbing from sixth place following the short programme to take gold with a decisive free skate.
The 21-year-old finished with a combined score of 152.73 points. Switzerland’s Sayra Bessire was second on 151.78, while Poland’s Karolina Bialas took bronze with 151.40.
Isaacs entered the free skate outside the podium positions, but produced the strongest performance of the final segment to overturn the deficit. Her victory made her the first South African woman to win the international Diamond Spin event.
The result represents a major step forward from her previous appearance at the competition. International Skating Union records show that Isaacs placed fifth at the Diamond Spin in 2024, before returning this season to claim the title.
Her progress has been shaped by an international training programme split between Cape Town and Bergamo, Italy. Isaacs has said the pressure of recent Olympic qualifying and championship campaigns helped her develop a more composed approach to competition.
That composure proved decisive in Katowice. Rather than chasing the points gap after the short programme, she focused on executing the free skate, allowing her to move past five competitors and secure the narrow overall victory.
The gold is significant for South African figure skating, a discipline that operates outside the country’s mainstream sporting structures and has fewer facilities than established winter-sport nations. Isaacs’ success adds international visibility to the local programme and gives emerging African skaters a new benchmark.
Isaacs is targeting further senior international competition and ultimately a place at the Winter Olympics. The Katowice victory provides momentum for that campaign and confirms her ability to recover under pressure against a competitive international field.
