Durban court views CCTV showing alleged gunmen before AKA and Tibz killings

The Durban High Court has viewed CCTV footage showing two men approaching Wish restaurant shortly before rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were shot dead in February 2023.

The footage, presented in the trial of seven men accused of the killings, shows the pair crossing the road as Forbes and his entourage leave the restaurant. One man appears to open fire while the other appears to cover the group with a firearm, according to SABC News. The two then run towards Gordon Road.

The surveillance recordings form part of the State’s effort to reconstruct the movements surrounding the shooting on Durban’s Florida Road. Mail & Guardian reported that investigators gathered footage from at least 17 locations around the city, including King Shaka International Airport, the hotel where Forbes stayed and venues visited before the group went to Wish.

State witness Constable Rajen Sanders has been taking the court through the recordings. The footage is being used to trace people and vehicles allegedly connected to the case. The defence has challenged aspects of the identification evidence, according to the Mail & Guardian report.

All seven accused have pleaded not guilty. The CCTV material is evidence being considered by the court; it does not by itself determine the guilt of any accused. Forbes and Motsoane were killed outside Wish restaurant on 10 February 2023.
