THE Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Lesotho on Thursday commemorated the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War at Avani Lesotho.
The event seeks to remember history, commemorate fallen heroes, cherish peace and create a better future.
Themed “The Unforgettable War of Resistance”, the commemoration included a photo exhibition of the atrocities committed by Japanese troops, the unyielding resistance of Chinese soldiers, the unity of the Chinese people both at home and abroad, and the solidarity of the international anti-fascist alliance.
Former Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili, former deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing, Speaker of the National Assembly Tlohang Sekhamane, and some members of Prime Minister Sam Matekane’s Cabinet, including the Minister Law and Justice, Richard Ramoeletsi, graced the event.
Leader of Opposition and leader of Democratic Congress (DC) Mathibeli Mokhothu was also present.
Ambassador of China to Lesotho, Yang Xiaokun, asserted that “All these images are a faithful reflection of history.”
Mr Xiaokun explained that 80 years ago, the Chinese people completely defeated the Japanese militarist aggressors after fighting a bitter and heroic war of resistance for 14 years.
“The victory was achieved under a national united front advocated by the Communist Party of China (CPC) against Japanese aggression.
“This marked the complete victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. It was a historic turning point for the Chinese nation emerging from the grave crises in modern times to embark on the journey toward great rejuvenation; it was also a major turning point in the course of world?history,” he said.
He further stated that it was during this war that the Republic of China experienced a significant loss, both through casualties and direct economic loss exceeding US$100 billion (over M1.7 trillion).
“The Chinese People’s War of Resistance also carried profound global significance. China was the first country to fight the fascist aggressor, experiencing the longest period of struggle, and suffering great sacrifices and heavy losses, making an indispensable contribution to the global war.
“During the stalemate phase of the war, China suffered over 35 million military and civilian casualties, and direct economic losses exceeding US$100 billion, making China one of the countries with the most sacrifice among the Allies.
“The China theater created crucial strategic space for the Allied forces by firmly pinning down over 70 percent of the Japanese army,” he said.
He further stated that it was during the same war (Second World War) where many brave Basotho soldiers lost their lives in Europe.
“We must not forget that during the World Anti-Fascist War, more than 20,000 brave Basotho soldiers fought in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East against fascist forces.
“Over 1,100 of them gave their lives on the battlefield, sacrificing for freedom and justice. I would like to pay the highest respect to the fallen heroes and all the brave soldiers,” he said.
On behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoana, Minister of Gender, Youth, and Social Development, Pitso Lesaoana, said China’s painful chapter is a reminder of nations’ collective responsibility to safeguard global peace and reject any ideology that promotes suppression. ?
“This commemoration serves not only as a solemn reflection on the painful chapters of history but also as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard international peace and promote a harmonious global order.
“It is celebration deeply rooted in a triumph of the human spirit over fascism, racism and unjust aggression, and it calls upon us all to embrace the richness of our shared humility and reject any ideology that promotes superiority of one race or nation over another,” he said.
He added that the People’s Republic of China’s resistance and fight against fascism is a wake-up call for the international community to stand united.
“The 14-year resistance of the Chinese People against aggression and fascism stands as a symbol of a global struggle for a better, more peaceful world.
“This historic resistance was not only a defining moment for China, but also a wake-up call for the international community to stand united against tyranny and oppression in all its forms.
“We are also reminded that nations may fall but they can rise again through unwavering determination and unity. The war brought immense suffering, yet it also revealed the profound strength of human solidarity and courage,” he said.
He added: “The resilience demonstrated by the Chinese people during this dark period, should inspire us all to continue striving for justice, equality and peace.
“For this resistance, the seeds of a new world order were sown, one founded on the principles of sovereignty, respect for human rights and the enduring pursuit of peace. It was in this spirit that the world came together in 1945 to establish the United Nations, a cornerstone of global cooperation and a guardian against the recurrence of such devastating conflicts.”
