FORMER Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Principal Secretary and prominent All Basotho Convention (ABC) member, Malefetsane Nchaka, has been remembered as a dedicated public administrator and committed grassroots political mobiliser.
Mr Nchaka was laid to rest yesterday at Ha Dinizulu, Makhaleng, after succumbing to prostate cancer on 3 January 2026.
ABC leader Nkaku Kabi described Mr Nchaka as a community leader and principled public servant who served the country with unwavering commitment and integrity throughout a distinguished career in public administration.
Mr Kabi said Mr Nchaka’s leadership was marked by professionalism, humility, and a deep commitment to advancing effective governance and service delivery.
“Mr Nchaka battled cancer, and we cannot say we lost him to it, but rather that he has finally rested. I worked with him at the Ministry of Water, and he was dedicated, passionate and strategic,” Mr Kabi said.
“He was good at planning and always pushed for the implementation of policies. We recognise him for his professionalism and humility during his tenure in the civil service.
“Beyond his government roles, he was an approachable mentor and a quiet mobiliser for development within his community. His memory will be honoured, and his contributions remembered with respect and gratitude.”
Mr Kabi said Mr Nchaka was a strong advocate for the decentralisation of power, believing that decision-making should be closer to the people.
“He pushed for decentralisation because councillors are better placed to understand the needs of communities than ministers. A minister may want to construct a road, while the people actually need farming assistance,” he said.
He extended condolences to Mr Nchaka’s family, the ABC, friends and colleagues, saying the party honours his “dual legacy as a dedicated public administrator and a grassroots political mobiliser”.
Mr Kabi also emphasised Mr Nchaka’s role as a stabilising presence during critical periods within the ABC.
Beyond his civil service career, Mr Nchaka remained actively engaged in the democratic process. During the 2022 National Assembly elections, he contested as the ABC candidate for Thaba-Putsoa Constituency (No. 44) but lost to Democratic Congress candidate Lebohang Monaheng.
Hordes of ABC supporters attended the funeral to pay their last respects to Mr Nchaka. Dressed in the party’s green, yellow and red colours, they sang and chanted party songs.
