MASERU— Five people were seriously injured after villagers from Ha Ramapepe and Makhoaneng in Leribe clashed over grazing pastures.
The police said three of the injured villagers were from Makhoaneng while the rest were from Ha Ramapepe.
Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said the villagers were fighting over a boundary on their grazing land.
Masupha said the police had since opened a case of public violence against the villagers.
He said the villagers were fighting using stones and sticks.
No arrests have been made yet.
Masupha said the villagers were both claiming the pastures as their own.
“Community members from the two villages all claim to own that piece of land which is used for grazing livestock,” he said.
He added that it was important that village chiefs know their boundaries so that there won’t be any disputes which might lead to bloodshed.
“During this season we receive a lot of cases of communities fighting over boundaries.”
Last year a Mafeteng man shot dead another individual from a neighbouring village in a dispute over grazing land.
He was later shot dead when he exchanged fire with the police as they tried to disarm him, Masupha said.
Several people have been injured while others have been killed during rows over grazing land.
