Mamelodi Sundowns ended Orlando Pirates’ four-year grip on the MTN8 trophy with a 2-0 victory in Saturday night’s final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Teboho Mokoena gave Sundowns the perfect start in the 11th minute. Thabang Matuludi’s effort created the opening and the midfielder reacted decisively to fire the Brazilians ahead before Pirates could settle into the contest.
Sundowns continued to press after the goal and forced goalkeeper Sipho Chaine into several interventions. Pirates gradually found more space as the first half progressed, but Ronwen Williams protected the lead when the defending champions threatened an equaliser.
The intensity rose before the interval, with referee Abongile Tom speaking to both coaches as challenges and touchline tensions increased. Sundowns went into half-time 1-0 ahead, having made the stronger start and defended their advantage under growing pressure.
Pirates were handed a major opportunity in the second half when they won a penalty. Ghampani Lungu failed to convert, leaving the Buccaneers chasing the game and allowing Sundowns to retain control of the scoreboard.
The final remained open until stoppage time, when Sundowns were awarded a penalty of their own. Iqraam Rayners converted to make it 2-0 and secure the trophy for Miguel Cardoso’s team.
The result ends Pirates’ run of four consecutive MTN8 titles and delivers Sundowns their first victory in the competition since 2021. It also gives Cardoso his first domestic cup as Sundowns coach.
For Sundowns, the win adds knockout success to a period of sustained league dominance. Pirates will have to regroup quickly after losing both the trophy and an opportunity to extend one of the strongest cup runs in South African football.
