THE Lesotho senior women’s cricket team will compete in Botswana’s biggest annual women’s cricket tournament, the Kalahari Women’s T20 International Tournament.
Hosted by the Botswana Cricket Association (BC), the tournament is scheduled for April this year but the exact dates are yet to be confirmed.
Lesotho was invited alongside eSwatini, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Brazil, Norway, Kuwait, Malawi, Cameroon, Nigeria, Malaysia, Canada, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Indonesia.
While it is yet to be known which other countries have accepted their invitations, Lesotho has confirmed its participation.
The Lesotho Cricket Association (LCA) public relations officer, Limakatso Masitise, confirmed Lesotho’s plans to participate in this year’s tournament.
“We were invited alongside many countries, and we have since confirmed our participation,” Masitise told the?Sunday Express?this weekend.
“However, the exact dates and fixtures are yet to be announced.”
The national cricket team coach, Dzikamai Alexander Mavhiko, relishes the opportunity to compete in this tournament which he said will give his players exposure.
He said the tournament is coming at the right time when they did not have any other confirmed big international event in their calendar this year.
“This is a good opportunity for us, it is high time we get more international exposure and also improve on our international rankings,” Mavhiko told the?Sunday Express.
“This will be our only major international event for the women’s senior team this year,” he said.
Since international tournaments remain few and far between, Mavhiko was planning on keeping the team busy with friendly matches against some clubs from South Africa.
The association is also planning to participate in regional tri-series competitions, as well as specialised skills camps facilitated by mentors from Cricket South Africa.
