Play-offs roar into life

THE Econet Premier League promotional play-offs roar into life this afternoon with Lithabaneng Golden hosting Ketane at Bambatha Tsita Sports Arena Grounds.

The play-offs features Lithabaneng Golden and Ketane who bot finished as runners up in the A Division streams and Likhopo who finished 12th on the premiership log.

The play-offs are meant to fill the void that was left by the now defunct Sandawana FC who were disqualified for failing to fulfil multiple league fixtures.

In the second fixture, Likhopo will play Lithabaneng Golden three days later at the same venue.

Likhopho face Ketane in the last of the play-off matches at Maputsoe DIFA Ground on Saturday.

Premier League management Committee (PLMC) spokesperson Lekholoa Mosito confirmed that the play-offs are set to start this weekend after protracted deliberations.

“All the parties have finally reached an agreement that the play-offs have to start this Sunday (today) with Lithabaneng Golden playing Ketane,” Mosito said.

Mosito said the play-offs will held in a round robin format where the teams will only play against each other once. The team that registers the most points will qualify to play in the premiership.

On new players Mosito said the teams will only be eligible to use players that were registered last season.

“We are aware that the transfer window is open and some teams have already started buying new players but only players that were registered last season are eligible for the play-offs. In any case, no team has registered for a club license yet so the new players are not yet registered.

“We met with all the teams that are participating in the play-offs and everything has been explained to them. We had preferred that the teams play in two legged play-offs but we were directed to change that by the Lesotho Football Association National Executive Council to ensure that we cut costs,” Mosito said.
