MASERU — A 27-year-old Roma man appeared in the Maseru Magistrate’s Court last Friday after he allegedly bashed to death his wife’s suspected lover.
The man, whose identity was not revealed, was charged with murder.
Police spokesman, Masupha Masupha, said the suspect accused his victim of having an affair with his wife and waylaid him as he came from work in the Thetsane industrial area.
“It was reported that the suspect attacked the victim near one of the factories in Thetsane.
“He (victim) was going home after work when the suspect started hitting him with a stick as he accused him of having an affair with his wife,” he said.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where he later died.
Masupha said people should not be allowed to carry sticks (melamu) around town as they are also dangerous weapons.
“This incident happened a few days after another had died under similar circumstances. This is sign that these sticks are very dangerous weapons and people should not be allowed to carry them when coming to town,” he said.
He said the suspect should have at least reported the matter to Child, Gender Protection Unit department or their relatives to help him solve the problem.
The suspect was remanded in custody.
Four weeks ago, a Mekateng man allegedly killed his five-year-old son before committing suicide.
It was reported that he accused his wife of being engaged in an extra-marital affair with another man.
The deceased had once called a family meeting to complain about the matter but the wife rejected the family advice.
