MASERU — A 27-year-old shop assistant from Thaba-Tseka appeared in court last week to answer a charge of theft. Police spokesperson, Masupha Masupha, said the suspect called the police claiming he had just been robbed of M17 000 at the supermarket. “It was reported that a supermarket in Thaba-Tseka had been robbed of M17 000 by unknown men. The report was made by a 27-year-old man who is a shop assistant at the supermarket,” Masupha said. “When police arrived at the scene the suspects had already fled but there was no sign of robbery even though the money had been taken.

“Police went around in search of the suspects. The shop assistant was taken in for questioning but there is a suspicion that he could have been the perpetrator in this situation,” he said. The suspect was released on M1 000 bail and is expected to appear in court next Tuesday.
“It is shocking that people will steal from their employers and ask police to investigate the case,” he said. In a separate incident, a 47-year-old man from Berea was charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl last Tuesday. According to the police the suspect is accused of licking the girl’s private parts.

The suspect was sentenced to four years in prison. Meanwhile, three men from Ha Ramonaheng were charged with the murder of a 30-year-old man in Teyateyaneng Magistrate’s Court last Friday. According to a police report, the suspect killed the victim because they wanted his money.
“The deceased, together with the suspects, were drinking at a public bar. It is reported that the suspects thought the deceased was carrying a lot of money and they then followed him when he left the bar before killing him. “They then threw his dead body in the cemetery,” he said.
All three suspects are in police custody.
