THE Ministry of Youth, Gender and Social Development has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign to educate the public about the Persons with Disabilities Equity Act 2021.

This important legislation aims to promote equality and dismantle the barriers that have historically hindered the full participation of people with disabilities in society.

To kickstart the sensitization process, the ministry organized a two-day workshop for media practitioners to ensure they understand the law and the rights of people with disabilities.

The ministry hopes to use the media to  dispel myths about disabilities while promoting positive representations of individuals with disabilities.

Speaking at the workshop, Thae Makhele, the ministry’s deputy principal secretary, emphasized that the law represented a constitutional commitment between the government and the public, to do better when approaching issues relating to people with disabilities.

“This is beyond just the law; it is evidence of the government’s commitment to preserving rights for all without discrimination,” he said.

Linkeng Khubetsoana, the Director of Legal Services at the ministry, stressed that one of the pivotal elements of the Act was its strong emphasis on non-discrimination.

“It explicitly prohibits discriminatory practices against persons with disabilities, guiding various sectors—such as education, employment, and healthcare—towards adopting inclusive policies and practices,” she stated.

The Act also highlights the importance of accessibility, mandating that all public and private buildings, transportation systems, and digital platforms be made accessible to individuals with disabilities within a five-year timeline of the law’s enactment.

As the ministry continues its awareness campaign, Ms Khubetsoana expressed hope that it would create a society where people with disabilities were recognized not just for their challenges but also for their strengths, capabilities, and contributions to the community.

“By fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect, the ministry envisions a future where all citizens, regardless of ability, can participate fully and equitably in all aspects of life. Only together can we build a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone,” Ms Khubetsoana said.
