‘Bulletproof’ vest steals show at ABC rally

Selimo Thabane — a member of the All Basotho Convention (ABC)’s Gauteng Province branch — yesterday stole the show when he appeared at a rally organised by Stadium Area Constituency legislator, Mophato Monyake, wearing a dummy bulletproof vest.

An unfazed Thabane shared jokes about his military-style black vest boldly written “SWAT” in white colour, stealing the thunder from Monyake as ABC supporters attending the rally shifted their attention to the youthful Gauteng man.

Thabane’s SWAT vest-stunt comes hard on the heels of the February 21 raid on the residence of former Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Major General Sam Makoro by the army, ostensibly searching for army uniform which he had reportedly been seen wearing at ABC rallies.
Makoro is the ABC’s Deputy Publicity Secretary and Maseru District Administrator.

Asked whether he was not afraid a similar raid would be conducted on his home, Thabane said:
“Our army uniform is different from what I’m wearing right now. Yes, from afar, one could mistake it for an army uniform, but it is not. So I cannot be afraid of any army raid because I have not done anything wrong; this is not a Lesotho army uniform.

“I have had this vest for almost 15 years now and I have never encountered any trouble moving around wearing it, and I don’t expect to start now.”
