The National University of Lesotho (NUL) Council has reportedly recommended Professor Nqosa Mahao to become the varsity’s new vice-chancellor (VC), the Sunday Express can reveal.

A highly placed source told the Sunday Express that the Council made its final selection on Saturday last week, and chose Professor Mahao over Professor Mafa Sejanamane, who had been acting VC since the unceremonious exit of American Professor, Sharon Siverts, last year .

“What is left now is for the King to be notified of this decision, through the Ministry of Education, and should His Majesty approve, then a public announcement would follow, possibly this coming week,” said the source.
Contacted for comment on the matter, the Ministry of Education spokesperson, Molikuoa Sekhonyana, said she was not aware of the issue.
“Even if it was true, it would be premature for me to comment on an issue that is still in progress,” Ms Sekhonyana said.

On his part, Professor Mahao yesterday told the Sunday Express: “I have only heard through the rumour-mill, that the NUL Council has decided to send my name to the government, that is the King, for the appointment. That is all I can say regarding the issue at the moment.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from the NUL Registrar, ‘Masefinela Mphuthing were fruitless yesterday as her phone rang unanswered.
