MASERU — A police constable from Sefikeng Police Station is facing charges of corruption after he
allegedly asked for a bribe from a motorist who had committed a traffic offence.
Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha told a press conference on Monday that the motorist had been involved in a car accident and asked the police officer to destroy evidence implicating him.
The motorist, Masupha said, promised to pay the officer if he would drop the case altogether.
Masupha said the police were however tipped off about the plan and set a trap.
The policeman, Masupha said, had promised to withdraw charges against the motorist if he paid him M1 000.
Masupha said it is against police ethics for an officer to accept a bribe.
He said the police officer is still at work as they are waiting for directives from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Once the DPP has preferred charges against him he will appear before a magistrate soon, Masupha said.
In a separate incident, a police constable was released on M250 bail after he was charged with defeating the ends of justice on September 1.
According to a police report Constable Makepe had unlawfully released from custody his male friend.
“The police officer released his friend who was in police custody.
“The suspect was facing robbery charges,” Masupha said.
