Vodacom confirmed league sponsor

MASERU — Weeks of speculation finally come to an end tomorrow when Vodacom Lesotho is unveiled as the sponsor of the country’s top four leagues.

This leaves the Lesotho Football Association (Lefa), which had turned the sponsorship issue into a farce, with egg on the face. Lefa scored a public relations own goal by constantly denying any links to Vodacom Lesotho, yet it had sent out documents indicating the mobile communications company as its sponsor.

Vodacom take over from its rival in the telecommunications sector, Econet-Telecom Lesotho. Econet, through its Buddie product, had sponsored the Premier League and three lower divisions since 2002.

Last season Econet sunk M750 000 into local football. It could not be established how much the Vodacom deal will be worth.

But the unveiling comes hard on the heels of Vodacom’s launch of a M1 million sponsorship deal for this year’s Vodacom Soccer Spectacular.

The Premier League kicked off last month with no brand sponsor for the game. But Vodacom advertising has been visible during top-flight games, causing widespread speculation that the company was on the verge of signing a major sponsorship deal with Lefa.

Lefa issued denial after denial, but tomorrow it will be official.
