IN a proactive response to the growing challenges of climate change, the Urban Preparedness Project Phase II is set to launch next month to help communities respond to the ravages of climate change.

This was revealed by Tšepang Maama, a focal member of the project team, during a one-day meeting in Hlotse, Leribe, this past week.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including local chiefs, village health workers and community councillors, who play crucial roles in ensuring that their communities are equipped to handle climate related incidents.

As the project prepares for its October launch, local officials and community members are encouraged to participate in the initiatives designed to cultivate resilience and adaptability in the face of increasingly unpredictable climate challenges.

Ms Maama said the project’s primary goal was preparing communities, particularly those vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, by providing the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively respond to?them.

She said the collaboration aims not only to protect vulnerable populations but also to establish a culture of preparedness and sustainability that will withstand future environmental threats.

“With the increasing frequency and severity of climate events, especially in flood-prone areas like Matukeng, it’s essential that we act decisively,” said Ms Maama.

“Our team of experts will arrive at the beginning of October to offer training and support that will enhance community preparedness.”

Phase II will build on the foundations laid in the first phase, which successfully engaged communities in discussions about climate adaptation, risk assessment, and response planning. The upcoming phase aims to deepen these efforts through targeted workshops, resource distribution, and support systems that foster sustainable practices, she said.

Speaking on behalf of the community leaders, Thato Makara, a local youth leader, expressed optimism about the project.

“Preparation is key in minimising the damage caused by natural disasters. We look forward to collaborating with the Urban Preparedness Project team,” Ms Makara said.
