MASERU — Prime Minister Tom Thabane will sign Lesotho Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Compact (CAADP) in Maseru next week.
Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mahala Molapo said CAADP is a noble initiative whose aim is not only to promote food security but to fight all challenges hindering agricultural development.
“As African countries including Lesotho, we want to go back to a situation where agriculture contributed significantly in promoting countries economic growth hence the compact,” he said.
He said CAADP is an important partnership for Africa’s development in agriculture saying this was blessed by the African Union Assembly held in Maputo a few years ago.
He went on and said the compact also prepares for core priorities of investment in agriculture, among others.
He said among other activities lined up will include various exhibitions on agriculture.
Echoing the same sentiments, the Minister of Agriculture, Lits’oane Lits’oane appealed for concerted efforts saying agriculture must also be turned into business so as to address the long outcry by Basotho.
Participants include representatives from African Union (AU), NEPAD as well as Lesotho officials, farmers and the public.
