PRIME Minister, Thomas Thabane, has appointed former National University of Lesotho (NUL) lecturer, Nthakeng Pheello Selinyane, as the government spokesperson.

The position has been held by the Communications, Science and Technology Minister for many years but last week the cabinet decided to create a separate positon from the ministry.

The Press Attaché in the Prime Minister’s office, Thabo Thakalekoala, yesterday confirmed Mr Selinyane’s appointment, saying “his appointment was made on Thursday and he is expected to commence his duties in the coming weeks”.

“The cabinet decided to have the government spokesperson and prime minister’s spokesperson as two different entities which will work together whenever the need arises,” Mr Thakalekoala said.

He said the government spokesperson’s responsibilities were to coordinate all ministries except the Prime Minister’s office and issue statements on behalf of the government.

He said the new government spokesperson will answer directly to the government secretary.

Mr Selinyane has vast media experience, having written for most English language newspapers in Lesotho.

He also hosted his own current affairs shows on People’s Choice FM and Joy FM and he was the Media Institute of Sothern Africa (MISA) Lesotho chairperson from 2001 to 2003.

He also led the Lesotho Union of Public Employees, Lesotho Universities Teachers and Researchers Union (LUTARU) and taught politics and administration and development studies at NUL.
