Tennis players prepare for All-Africa Games

MASERU — Lesotho’s Lawn Tennis team has begun preparations for the All-Africa Games to be held in Mozambique later this year.

The games will run between September 3 and 18.

The squad, which is made up of Bishop Mosebi, Ntjellane Mosehle, Mojalefa Mothibe, Paseka Motsamai, Nthabiseng Nqosa, ‘Mammuso Rannana, Pulane Monyatsi and Seapei Senatla, began an intensive training programme last week.

Lesotho Lawn Tennis Association public relations officer, Chaka Mokhele, told the Sunday Express that they will stop at nothing to ensure the team is in top shape ahead of the games.

“The players, together with their reserves, are going through intensive training at the national tennis courts every day,” Mokhele said.

“Although they are commuting from home every day, the intensive training camp will run from June and will proceed until their trip to Mozambique.”

He said all the eight players have represented Lesotho in different categories in the past and were all graduates of the International Tennis Federation.

“This means Lesotho stands a big chance of bringing medals from the All Africa Games given their international exposure,” Mokhele said.

He added: “All of them have gone through the International Tennis Federation’s development programme like playing for Under-12, 14, 16 and 18 both locally and internationally.”

Mokhele said the association had bought new rackets and tennis balls to help the players prepare better.

“No matter how good a country can be, tennis is still a very expensive sport for most players. They need to have the right equipment to ensure excellent performance and results.

“Hence the association has bought rackets, tennis balls and rackets strings for the players,” he said.

Funding was provided by the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission.
