Teams bring smiles to needy faces
FOUR premier league teams handed M15 000 each to schools and orphanages of their choice this past week as part of an Independence Cup corporate social investment (CSI) project sponsored by Metropolitan Lesotho and Standard Lesotho Bank.
Bantu donated groceries worth M15 000 to Morapeli Disabled Centre, while Lioli did the same to Kananelo School for the Deaf.
LCS handed out M15 000 worth of building materials for the construction of toilets at Holy Innocent Primary School in Ha Abia, while Kick4Life donated school uniforms and paid outstanding school fees for underprivileged pupils at Thetsane High School.
During Lioli’s handover of the groceries to Kananelo School for the Deaf, on Wednesday, the club’s Second Vice-President, Mothoalo Mothoalo, lauded Metropolitan Lesotho and Standard Lesotho Bank for assisting them in lending a helping hand to underprivileged people in Berea.
The Ha Bua-Sono-based Kananelo School for the Deaf was established in 1991. Currently, 69 pupils are enrolled at the school who are doing standard one to seven.
“I firstly want to pour my heart out to the two companies (Metropolitan and Standard Lesotho Bank) for giving us this opportunity to give back to the Berea community because these are the people who made this team what it is, and it also feels good for us to put smiles on their faces,” Mothoalo said, adding that they chose the school because of the noble cause it is pursuing.
The praise was echoed by the school’s representative, Sister Mariam Mosebo, who said the groceries were a timely gesture especially after they lost sponsorship from Sentebale.
“We are very thankful for this gesture as evidenced by the joy on the children’s faces,” she said.
“We had been surviving with the assistance of Sentebale since 2008. Unfortunately, our contract with them ended in August, so we have been struggling to make ends meet since then.”
Sister Mosebo said the school was struggling to remunerate its nine teachers and other support staff.
“We may have to part ways with some of them because of the expiry of the Sentebale contract,” she said.
“However, we have been looking for new sponsors to fill the gap. So, the groceries have come at the right time since it will enable us to look for new sponsors without worrying about food for some time.”
On behalf of the sponsors, Metropolitan Lesotho Marketing Manager, Tšokolo Makeka, said the initiative was their way of giving back to the community.
“We wanted to lend a helping hand to the less privileged. Through Lioli, we have managed to put a smile on the faces of these children. We are hopeful that the groceries will make a positive impact on this school,” said Makeka.
