MASERU — A 24-year-old school teacher from Quthing appeared in the Maseru magistrate’s court on Tuesday to answer charges of rape.
Bohlale Matsoso is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman on December 21 last year.
He has denied the charge claiming that when they had sex last month they were in love.
The woman denies that she had a sexual relationship with the accused.
She told the court on Tuesday that Matsoso had sex with her without her consent last December.
Matsoso was granted M300 bail and was ordered not to interfere with crown witnesses.
He was also ordered to attend court proceedings until the matter has been dealt with conclusively.
Maseru public prosecutor, Thabang Motsamai, did not oppose the granting of bail.
“I have no objection but the bail should be with binding conditions which the accused should adhere to,” Motsamai said.
Motsamai said the complainant did not have a problem with the court granting bail but only wanted the accused to stop calling her on her mobile phone.
“He must stop calling me on my phone,” she said.
Meanwhile, Matsoso was on Tuesday ordered to undergo a compulsory HIV test to establish his status.
Under the Sexual Offences Act of 2003, all rape suspects must undergo tests with those found guilty of infecting their victims with the deadly disease facing a possible maximum death sentence.
Matsoso was remanded to January 19.
Earlier on Matsoso’s lawyer, Advocate Lebona, told the court that his client was fully co-operating with the police and that he was a breadwinner and a professional.
The case, which is set to continue on 19 January, is before Maseru magistrate Mothebe Mothebe.
