MASERU – Stlofa on Friday cheered up close to a thousand inmates at Maseru Central Prison with an unforgettable performance alongside gospel musician Majara.

The show was dedicated to Women’s Month, but it was held for the male prisoners because “men are also affected by women’s issues”.

Stlofa said he was planning to hold another show for female inmates.

On Friday the inmates themselves set the ball rolling with soulful songs before the two musicians took to the stage.

Stlofa, whose real name is Molibeli Mokake,  sent the inmates gaga when he belted out the track Ntja tsa Media from his recently released first solo album, Hao Poho Peli.

The prisoners sang along and danced as the former Lefate man brought a rare festive mood to the country’s biggest correctional service centre.

After the show, Stlofa told Xpress People he had decided to dedicate the show to inmates who are “normally forgotten”.

“As the world celebrates Women’s Month, as a musician I decided to bring something exciting for the inmates who are normally forgotten during such occasions,” he said.

“I took the initiative to use my God-given talent to connect and build a special relationship with the inmates while helping to rehabilitate them.”

He said he decided to host the special show for men to celebrate Women’s Month because men are also affected by issues that affect women.

“I thought it would be wise to involve men who are mostly the perpetrators of violence against women,” Stlofa said.

“I wanted to make them aware of how important women are in this world and help and prepare them to be wonderful men who will go out and treat women with respect even long after these celebrations.”

The dreadlocked musician hailed the show as a success.

“The day was a success. Everything went quite well and I was impressed by the style in which we were welcomed by the inmates who performed before we went on stage,” he said.

“These guys here are talented. I feel our relationship shouldn’t end here so I have decided to work with some who I felt are just amazing in the field of music.”
