Standard Bank offers free online Banking

STANDARD Lesotho Bank (SLB) has started offering data-free access to its electronic banking channels to facilitate easier transactions in support of social distancing.

The move is in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) which had by yesterday infected over 1170 people in neighbouring South Africa.

The free-data access facility allows SLB clients who are also Vodacom Lesotho subscribers, to access both the Standard Bank App and internet banking at no cost.

Although no cases have so far been recorded in Lesotho, people have been encouraged to practice social distancing to reduce chances of catching the virus.

“In an effort to encourage social distancing and enable clients to transact with ease, Standard Lesotho Bank has launched data-free access on Standard Bank App and internet banking,” SLB’s head of marketing and communications Manyathela Kheleli said on Friday.

“This concept is referred to as Reverse Data Billing. Standard Lesotho Bank will now bear the cost of data on behalf of its clients.

“This also serves as a response to the call by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Health to adopt ‘social distancing,’ as a means to combat and flatten the curve in the spread of COVID-19.”

He said clients who are already registered on the Standard Bank App and internet banking can now enjoy this data-free benefit.

“Clients are encouraged to visit the nearest branch or contact their Banker for registration on internet banking. Thereafter they can download the Standard Bank/Stanbic App on PlayStore or AppStore to join over 70 percent of our clients who enjoy data-free online banking. Once registered, clients will then have access to the Bank’s services at their convenience.”

For her part, head of personal and business banking Selloane Tsike encouraged all their clients to take advantage of this data free offer. She also encouraged them to habitually use the Standard Bank App and internet banking and enjoy the convenience offered by both channels.

“We are extremely delighted to introduce this development during such a critical time when we are facing the COVID-19 global outbreak. This new offering comes at a time when Standard Lesotho Bank is encouraging clients to reduce instances of going into branches and ATMs, in order to encourage social distancing, to help reduce the potential of spreading the coronavirus which has been declared as a global pandemic by the (WHO),” Ms Tsike said.

She said reverse data billing currently applies to Vodacom subscribers only although plans are already at an advanced stage to also provide this service to Econet Telecom subscribers.
