MASERU — A soldier was killed while another was injured in a shooting that broke out during a court martial hearing at Makoanyane Barracks on Thursday.
A press release from the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) has confirmed that a member of the army died in hospital while the other, who is now facing a murder charge, was still recovering following the shooting.
“The two were shot and injured and they were rushed to hospital where unfortunately one died and the other is still under medical supervision,” said the statement.
Captain Ntlele Ntoi told the Sunday Express on Friday that the two army officers were hospitalised after one opened fire during a court hearing against another soldier.
“There was a disciplinary court against a member of the army. He suddenly became unruly and there was a shooting,” Ntoi said. “One soldier died later in hospital while the other is still recovering. Further investigations are yet to find out how the two were shot.”
He said more details of the shooting will be revealed once the investigations by the police and the army are complete.
“Investigations have begun to find out what really happened. The names of the deceased and the injured will be announced later.”
Ntoi said no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting incident.
“People should remain calm. This incident does not mean that there is a crisis within the army or in the country,” the LDF said in the statement.
The statement did not say what triggered the incident.
