A MEMBER of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) on Thursday allegedly shot and killed a 37-year-old man the police believe had been stalking and harassing him after suspecting he was having an affair with his wife.
According to the District Commissioner for Maseru Urban Police, Senior Superintendent Mofokeng Kolo, the soldier allegedly shot the man along Kingsway in Maseru, following a brawl.
Senior Superintendent Kolo on Friday said although the soldier, who was injured in the incident, was not yet in police custody, a case of murder had been opened against him.
“Preliminary investigations have shown that the soldier retaliated after he was attacked by the now-deceased,” Snr Supt Kolo said.
“The now-deceased was shot in the chest and stomach area and died on the spot.”
He explained the soldier was walking along Kingsway when he was allegedly attacked with a wooden pick-handle from behind, by the now-deceased.
“He fell to the ground and was severely assaulted all over the body before he opened fire, and killed his assailant,” Snr Supt Kolo said.
“The police recovered the broken pickhandle suspected to have been used in the assault while the soldier was rushed to hospital where he was treated as an outpatient. He is recovering from home.”
