MOHALE’S HOEK — A 23-year-old man from Mohale’s Hoek was beaten to death by angry villagers a fortnight ago for allegedly sodomising a 13-year-old boy.
Police spokesman Masupha Masupha said the boy was herding sheep when the man raped him.
“The suspect grabbed the boy and raped him during the day while he was herding sheep,” Masupha said.
“The suspect was caught by villagers later that day.”
The police spokesman said angry villagers beat up the suspect until he died.
In a separate incident in Mohale’s Hoek, a seven-year-old girl was raped by her brother-in-law on June 30.
Masupha said the girl arrived at her sister’s home at around 7pm and found her brother-in-law alone who forcibly pulled her to the bed and raped her.
“The girl found the elder brother of her sister’s husband who pulled her to bed and raped her,” Masupha said.
The girl reported the matter to her grandmother the following day.
The suspect is still at large.
In Ha-Tikoe in Maseru, a 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her 28-year-old stepson two weeks ago following an argument over money.
Police said the suspect had complained that his stepmother owed him an undisclosed amount of money.
“It was reported that the suspect went to the shop owned by the deceased and demanded his money,” Masupha said.
The suspect then stabbed the deceased following an argument.
The woman was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police have opened a case of murder against the suspect.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man from Bela-Bela in Berea was beaten to death two weeks ago following an argument over pastures.
According to the police, the deceased was grazing his livestock on reserved pastures.
The suspect then tried to impound the livestock for illegally grazing on the reserved pastures but the herdsman resisted, sparking a fight.
“The suspect tried to drive away the livestock from the reserved pastures but the deceased stopped the livestock,” Masupha said.
He said the suspect then hit the deceased with a stick.
He died on the scene.
The suspect then handed himself over to the police.
