Sejanamane for top AU post

Keiso Mohloboli

PROMINENT National University of Lesotho (NUL) lecturer, Professor Mafa Sejanamane, has been appointed as Lesotho’s Permanent Representative at the African Union (AU) in Ethiopia, the Sunday Express can reveal.

Prof Sejanamane’s appointment comes at a time when the government has also identified candidates to take up ambassadorial posts in Malaysia, Japan, Ireland, Canada and the United States of America.

Prof Sejanamane yesterday told the Sunday Express that he was not aware of the appointment and declined to further comment on the issue.

“I have not been informed of the appointment in question and can’t comment further in that regard,” Prof Sejanamane said.

However, the Government Secretary, Moahloli Mphaka, yesterday confirmed Prof Sejanamane’s appointment in an interview with the Sunday Express. He however, declined to disclose the names of those who were earmarked for ambassadorial posts.

There has been speculation that those earmarked for the posts include former Trade Minister and All Basotho Convention (ABC) activist, Sekh’ulumi Ntsoaole, Basotho National Party (BNP) women’s league president, Palesa Mosetse, former ABC Thaba Bosiu legislator, Boomo Sofonea.

“There is nothing to hide about Ntate Sejanamane’s selection because he is going to the African Union as Lesotho’s Permanent Representative in the AU,” Mr Mphaka said.

“There are candidates who have been identified to represent Lesotho as ambassadors in five countries but the government is still waiting for an agreemo (a memorandum from one country to another agreeing to the appointment of an ambassador or envoy) from the respective countries before the announcement of the appointments.

“It will be premature to disclose the names of the people who will be appointed ambassadors because they haven’t been officially appointed, but they have only been identified,” Mr Mphaka.

Mr Mphaka also dismissed suggestions in some quarters that the ABC-led government was simply rewarding its members with crucial appointments, saying, “All the identified candidates are competent professionals who are entrusted to represent Lesotho and they are not only from ABC but all the four parties in the current coalition government”.
