THE best performers at the three-day Iba Mbaye World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) fellowship training that starts on Tuesday stand a chance to win M13 500 joint scholarships.
The training is scheduled to end on Thursday at Lepereng Olympafrica Center (LOC) in Maseru while the students will get scholarships to study at their respective schools.
Twenty children (10 boys and 10 girls) aged 12 to 14 years will enroll in the fellowship programme where top two performers will be awarded with a joint scholarship. The scholarship is courtesy of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and International Olympafrica Foundation (IOF). The rest of the participants will be awarded certificate of attendance.
The 20 participants were selected based on their active participation in the LOC daily programmes namely; weightlifting, frontball, volleyball, basketball and taekwondo.
“Beneficiaries of the training are frequent users of the center and are in their final year of primary and secondary education,” a statement from LOC.
“The training is organised pursuant to the attainment of the LOC mandate, ‘provision of socio-educational activities’ and fulfils the Lesotho National Olympic Committee’s strategic objective of strengthening gender equality.
“The participants will be sensitised on the Olympic values education programme, electronic anti-doping education and kids’. The main focus would be on throwing, jumping and sprinting which will also serve as the basis of their evaluation.”
This will be the second time for Lesotho to host the programme with the first edition being held in 2008. The 2008 winners were Khathatso Lerata and Matela Korolo from Itekeng and Bishop de Mazenod High Schools respectively.
The statement also said there would also be five kilometre fun run, Iba Maya race, tug of war, beach volleyball and weightlifting before the handing over of the certificates.
“The awards will be announced on Saturday after the celebration of the 27th anniversary of the IOF and the 11th anniversary of the LOC,” the statement said.
