MASERU — A businessman and two members of his family were shot dead in their home in Mafeteng during an armed robbery last week, police have said.

An eight-year-old girl was also shot and sustained serious wounds in the incident.

Police spokesman Masupha Masupha said the four were attacked by armed robbers who demanded money.

“The businessman, aged 41, his wife aged 38 and their niece aged 13 were shot in their home while their daughter was injured,” Masupha said.

“The robbers first shot the eight-year-old girl and demanded that the parents should give them money.”

Masupha said the robbers then ransacked the house searching for money.

He said it was not clear if the robbers managed to flee with any cash.

The police spokesman however said the police had found M10 000 stuffed in the businessman’s pockets when they visited the crime scene.

Masupha said the suspects were still at large.

Investigations into the case were continuing, he said.

In Morija, a 24-year-old man was stoned to death on July 5 by his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend.

The police said the man, whose identity was not revealed, had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s home to collect his children without his former girlfriend’s consent.

But a man who was now living with the woman was not amused and began assaulting the deceased.

“The 66-year-old man hit the deceased with a stone on the head while trying to stop him from taking the children,” Masupha said.

He said the man was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect is in police custody.

In Levi’s Nek in Leribe, a 20-year-old man was beaten to death by his 22-year-old brother following a dispute over M200.

The elder brother accused his younger sibling of stealing his money.

“The suspect hit the deceased with a lebetlela stick because he suspected that he had stolen his M200,” Masupha said.

The suspect is in police custody.

In Quthing’s Ha Sejakhosi, a 26-year-old man was beaten to death on July 6 after he allegedly murdered his brother and threatened to kill other villagers.

“It is reported that the deceased killed his elder brother and attempted to kill his sister,” Masupha said.

“The angry villagers killed him because he had threatened to kill other villagers on the same day.”

Masupha said the deceased had an illegal firearm which he had used to intimidate and threaten people.

The police recovered a 7.65 firearm from the deceased.

In Lithoteng in Maseru, three men aged between 26 and 34 were arrested last Sunday for robbing a bar.

The police said the men stormed the bar at 1am.

“The robbers asked everybody who was in the bar to lie down. They then took the money and fled,” Masupha said.

“The owner of the bar called Thamae police and reported that he had been robbed of M7 500 by three men.”

The owner gave the police a description of the men and the car they were driving.

“The robbers were caught dancing in another bar in Lekhaloaneng,” Masupha said.

The three robbers were arrested and are in police custody.
