MASERU — Local chef Miriam “Ska” Moteane together with three others hosted a gala dinner at Maseru Sun Cabanas on Wednesday to raise funds to help improve the teaching of agriculture in schools.
The event was organised by a local company, Flava of Africa that comprises Ska Moteane, Ma-lord Mefane, Moleboheng Rampou and Mary Hyoky.
The four told XpressPeople that they started a fund-raising project which seeks to improve the lives of Basotho through healthy food.
The idea was mooted three years ago following the publication of Moteane’s cooking book, Cuisine of the Mountain Kingdom.
Addressing the guests, Ma-lord Mefane who was the MC said that it was never easy to start this project.
“Flava of Africa started this project through the aid of Peace Corps and Pick’n Pay shop who are already working with schools to strengthen their agricultural programmes,” she said.
She said three schools — Lerotholi Secondary School in Nazareth, Qholaqhoe High School in Butha Buthe and St. Leo Primary — will benefit from the programme.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Mamonare Mosase, the principal at Qholaqhoe High School thanked the group and praised them for their initiative.
“Flava of Africa is a gift from God. It is going to help us feed these kids who come from destitute backgrounds.
“Some of the students come to school on empty stomachs and only get a meal during lunch time which is offered at school. With this help we will be able produce more food to feed them,” she said.
Moteane, whose cookbook won the best African cook book award, thanked everyone who came for the support.
“Looking at African countries, they all have staple food. The only difference is the manner in which they are prepared. We have tried to collect some of the recipes which are Africa’s pride and put them into a compilation. I would also like to thank people who have lent out a helping hand to make all this possible,” she said.
Moteane said the dinner was also celebrated in commemoration of Africa Month as the recipes that were used to prepare meals were from all over Africa.
The project is sponsored by Pickn’Pay, Mankabelane Communications and Sun International.
Vodacom Superstar RnB category winner, Majisto, and local acapella group, Those Guys, entertained the guests.
