PLMC races to renew Econet contract

THE outgoing Premier League Management Committee (PLMC) is racing against time to renew the elite league’s sponsorship deal with Econet Telcom Lesotho before its upcoming elective annual general meeting later this month.

The PLMC is expected to hold the AGM this month at the end of its two-term tenure but spokesperson Moeketsi Ramakatsa says they is still a lot of work to be done before they leave.

Econet penned a three-year contract with the PLMC three years ago. The contract was worth M6 million.

Ramakatsa said their target was to have renewed the Econet contract by mid-August.

“This is our last term in office but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have failed to achieve some of our targets,” Ramakatsa said.

“Now we are hoping to finalise the negotiations for a new deal with Econet so that we do a proper handover with the incoming committee.

“Although we are still negotiating, we are happy that Econet is still interested in sponsoring the league.”

The committee will soon engage the Lesotho National Insurance Group (LNIG) regarding the completion of the 2020 edition of the LNIG Top8 which was disrupted by the Covid-19 outbreak.

However, LeFA has already resolved that the competition, which was in the semi-final stage be played as an off-season tournament later this year.

“We must also seal deals with other sponsors like MGC and Alliance Insurance Challenge.”

He said they were also planning to host their annual awards sometime this month. The nominations have already started.

“With the help of the LeFA technical director (Leslie Notši), we have started taking nominations and hopefully, thy will be announced this coming week. We will then appoint a panel to select the winners.

“Our target is to hold the awards in the same manner that we have held them in the past years by inviting both the winners and the nominees along with the league winners. However, that will be determined by the Covid-19 regulations.

“While it is challenging, our pledge is to provide a smooth landing for the incoming committee by concluding all our targets before we leave office,” Ramakatsa said.
