Notsi cautious ahead of Cosafa U-20 tourney

MASERU — Let’s take it one game at a time; that is the message from the Makoanyane XI coach, Leslie Notši ahead of the Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 Championship which begins in South Africa today.
Notši was speaking after Lesotho wrapped-up their preparations for the tournament with a 0-2 defeat to their South African counterparts at the Central Prisons on Thursday.
“This is the first time we have played an international friendly; I wanted to see if the players can play as a team,” Notši said, after the match.
“The flashes were there; the second side that played (in the second half) was more offensive and we created a lot of chances.”
Lesotho showed a vastly improved, second-half display but as is the norm, the finishing and decision-making in the final third, was woeful.
“Our finishing wasn’t clinical enough. We have to work on our finishing, as we are going into a Cup competition and goals are going to be crucial,” Notši said.
“Tactical awareness has to improve; the goals we conceded were very soft,” he said.
Lesotho open their campaign against Botswana on Tuesday.
The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday but has been moved forward.
Lesotho’s second and final match will be on Friday against Zimbabwe.
But Lesotho have been hampered by lack of friendly games in the run-up to the tournament, which roars into life today with hosts South Africa facing Namibia in a Group A clash.
The Makoanyane XI faced LCS twice and Thursday’s tie against South Africa was their only international friendly ahead of the tournament.
“Time is not on our side. The games we have played are not enough. Pirates had said they would give us a friendly game (tomorrow) but we had to turn them down because we are playing on Tuesday,” Notši said.
“The game against South Africa showed us where we are lacking and where we need to improve.”
The Makoanyane XI had a disappointing performance in last year’s Under-20 Championship, finishing bottom of their group after losing 0-4 to South Africa, 1-3 to Seychelles and 1-2 to Zambia.
“We have to look at going past the first round. We would want to take it step by step. I don’t want to look past the group stage,” Notši said.
