New water plant to feed textile factories

MASERU — The Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) has set up a new water treatment plant at Ha Ratjomose that will supply 20 million litres of
water per day to clothing and textile
industries in Thetsane.

The M92 million plant was officially opened on Friday by Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili.

The plant will also expand water supply for residents in Ha Tsolo, Ha
Shelile, Masowe, Ha Tikoe, Thetsane West and Ha Lesia.

Speaking at the event Mosisili said one of the country’s Millennium
Development Goals is to ensure that at least half of the country’s population has
access to clean water.

He said this goal could be achieved if all development stakeholders pull in the same direction.

Initially government had budgeted M77 million for the project but this
later increased to M88 million due to an increase in the cost of
materials.

The figure went up further to M92 million after some pipes were
damaged by heavy rains and they had
to be replaced.

“We came up with this project after realising that there is a shortage of water in the Thetsane textile industry and this could have serious repercussions on the country’s future investments,” Mosisili said.

The project was also a response to the increase in demand for water for domestic consumption in Maseru and its surrounding areas, caused by rapid urbanisation and industrial
development.
