Music awards postponed indefinitely

MASERU — The Lesotho Haeso Music Awards have been postponed indefinitely.

An official in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Jobo Molapo, said the ministry was still working on setting a new date after the awards were postponed last month.

Molapo said they were contemplating asking the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) to organise the awards.

“When looking at their main objective of promoting culture and arts, we decided they should be coordinated by the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) because it is mandated with promoting Lesotho as the ideal tourism destination,” Molapo said.

He added: “The process of nominating the best artistes has been undertaken so the awards will eventually take place this year, it’s just that we haven’t set a final date yet.”

The new co-ordinators would need more time to organise the awards because they do not have enough funds.

“The handover to the LTDC was carried out in the middle of the financial year. This means the LTDC have not budgeted for the awards but we are working together to ensure they are presented,” Molapo said.

He said finances were low this year and this would affect every aspect of the competition including prizes.

“The ministry’s budget was reduced by approximately M10 million this year and this will affect the quality of the awards because LTDC receives the bulk of its funds from the ministry.”

“We never had a budget for the awards. The project was embedded on other existing projects that we budgeted for,” he said.

Molapo added that they had decided to hand over the awards to the LTDC because it is mandated to promote Lesotho’s tourism.

“With its mandate, the LTDC will easily carry out the set objectives of not only providing a promotional platform for local talent but to also improve relations between the accommodation sector within tourism and the local artistes,” he said.
