MASERU — The government says it has begun constructing the 42-kilometre road from Mokhotlong to Sani Pass.
The principal secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Lebohang Phooko, told a press conference on Tuesday that China GEO Engineering Corporation began work on the project on May 2.
The project, which is expected to take three years, is part of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Lesotho and South Africa.
Phooko also announced that the reconstruction of a road from Oxbow to Mapholaneng would begin soon.
The project, which is being undertaken by Cooperativa Muratori Cementitsi, started in March. It is expected to be completed in three years.
Phooko said the contractor for the project had been paid in advance by government and was now mobilising staff and equipment onsite.
The project is being funded by the government to the tune of M400 million.
Phooko said the government is also funding the rehabilitation of the Maseru to Mafeteng road.
Work on this project involves filling potholes..
Phooko said the delay in filling the potholes was due to the non-availability of bitumen.
“We expect that the filling of the potholes will be completed next week on Friday.”
