MOSITO Mohapi’s dream of making it to the Redbull Pump Track World Championships set for 18 and 19 October in Köniz-Oberried, Switzerland is in limbo as the dates clash with his final examinations.
Mohapi, a student at Christ the King High School will be sitting for his final Form E examinations starting early next month.
He qualified for the world finals in March this year during a round of qualifiers in Roma and he is expected to fly to Switzerland for the finals next month.
However, according to Tumelo Makhetha, who has been organising Mohapi’s trip, they are now in a quandary as the athlete may end up missing the opportunity.
He said on the days Mohapi is supposed to leave the country, he is scheduled to write science and mathematics examinations.
Makhetha said they are racing against time to see if they can make special arrangements for Mohapi to be allowed to write the two subjects on different dates.
“We met with the school principal last week and he said he was going to consult with the examinations council to hear if they can come up with a special arrangement for him to write before his departure or soon after his return,” Makhetha said.
He said at the moment they are still continuing with the preparations for the trip and Mohapi was in Pretoria with Christian Schmidt applying for his visa.
“Mohapi is in Pretoria now with Chris where they are applying for his visa while awaiting the principal’s response.”
He said it remains unclear whether or not the request would be accepted.
He however, said should their efforts fail to yield the desired results, they would not force Mohapi to travel as his studies were the first priority.
“Of course, this is a life time opportunity but also, we have to be considerate when it comes to school. If our efforts fail then we will have no other option but to cancel the trip. His studies are the first priority,” Makhetha said.
