Metropolitan Lesotho gives villagers blankets

SEMONKONG — Vulnerable villagers in Semonkong last Thursday kissed Lesotho’s bitter winter good-bye when they received blankets from a local insurance company.

Semonkong, about 130 kilometres south-east of Maseru, is nestled in the highlands which are infamous for their bitter winters.

Metropolitan Lesotho, a local insurance company, donated 74 blankets worth M10 000 to disadvantaged people of Semonkong.

Metropolitan Lesotho managing director, Nkau Matete, said the donation was in response to an appeal by local chief, Mohlakana Lerotholi, to provide blankets to the elderly and under-privileged.

“Our company is supported by Basotho. As a way of giving back to the community the company has donated to some disadvantaged people in the past and we are continuing to do so with this kind of donation,” Matete said.

Matete said Metropolitan Lesotho had recently donated food parcels and some groceries to `Malibuseng orphanage in Maseru East. He said the company had also financed the building of a protected well which now supplies clean water to Tsosane village in Maseru.

Matete said his company was committed to supporting projects that benefit the community.

The head of retail at Metropolitan Lesotho, Bonang Sonopo, said the firm last week sponsored sports competitions for primary and high schools to the tune of M30 000.

“Our main focus is to help develop sports in the country from grassroots, as sport unites people. There is an urgent need for people today to exercise and ensure better health and growth,” Sonopo said.

Chief Lerotholi thanked Metropolitan for coming to their rescue adding that orphans, the aged and herd boys would receive first preference.

“I asked for assistance from Metropolitan and they have responded by providing funds to buy blankets for the poor from the 17 villages,” Chief Lerotholi said.

He appealed to other companies operating in Lesotho to assist disadvantaged sections of society.
