MASERU — Matlama’s points tally keeps growing and so does their crowd.
Yesterday, playing against the third-worst team in the Premiership, Tse Putsoa’s faithful once again came out to watch their heroes – some singing songs of encouragement, others blowing vuvuzelas.
Matlama’s executive does have to fight rogue elements among their supporters but on the field, there are no such problems. This current team has all the hallmarks of being one of the greatest Matlama teams of all time.
Despite making six changes to the side which beat Lerotholi last weekend, it never showed as Matlama won their third successive match to stretch their lead at the top of the Vodacom Premier League to 10 points again.
Tse Putsoa will now face LDF, Likhopo and Lioli in a season-defining two weeks.
“We need two more wins to take the league, and we want to get them as soon as we can,” Matlama coach Ntebele Taole said afterwards. “I’m happy with the performance because for most of these players, it was the first time they were in the starting line-up. I’m sure people thought we wouldn’t play this well today.”
One of those players who took their chance was Hlomelang Theko, who has found himself on the fringes of the team after starring in the first half of the season. Theko opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Matlama cruised to a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half was a more even affair and Majantja threatened to steal a share of the points when Thato Ramakaoe levelled in the 75th minute.
But just as they have done many times this season, Matlama responded emphatically – Pali Tšalong heading in the winner just two minutes later.
Despite the loss, Majantja coach Masupha Letsie was having none of the relegation talk, notwithstanding the team being 11 points from safety.
“We are not going to get relegated; Majantja is not a team that can be relegated, maybe other teams. We will get 35 points if we win all our matches and that is what we are going to do,” Letsie declared.
One team that will be relegated if they fail to win are bottom-placed Bothe-Bothe Roses, who face LDF today.
