MASERU Golf Club will today host a women’s empowerment and victory celebration tournament in Maseru.
Sponsored by Liberty Life Lesotho and Nedbank, the tournament is open to all golfers.
Maseru Golf Club captain, Thabang Khabo, told the Sunday Express that the tournament was meant to empower female golfers and celebrate their achievements in the sport with the hope of attracting more.
“The tournament is supposed to encourage new female who seem to be performing well,” Khabo said.
“We want to show them appreciation and give them courage to continue the good work as we believe that will attract more women into the sport.
A fortnight ago, the club was represented in the 2021 Lekoa Classic Tournament in South Africa. Female golfer, Julia Seturumane emerged the tournament’s overall winner with 74 points after two days. She recorded 36 and 38 points in the two days respectively.
Another Mosotho, Teboho Tlaitlai, was named the overall winner on the first day with 40 points.
“Our team performed well in the Lekoa Classic and we think that deserves a celebration especially for our ladies. So, we organised the Sunday tournament to gather golfers and celebrate the victory together.
“We will be celebrating all the 16 players who participated in the Lekoa tournament especially the fact that a female from our club won,” Khabo said.
Khabo said they were also gathering ideas of how to attract more youths into the sport.
“We not focusing only on women but also on how to empower youths. It is not good to always have old players for international competitions. We need younger players for continuity,” he said.
As of yesterday, 36 players had registered for today’s tournament.
