MAJANTJA president Phomolo Mantutle has welcomed the return of the A-Division Top 8 tournament that had been suspended for the past two years.

The tournament which features the top four teams from both Southern and Northern streams was re-launched on Friday at Bambatha Sports Arena in Maseru.

Majantja, who won the Southern stream to gain promotion into the Vodacom Premier League, will lock horns with Limkokwing University.

Sefotha-fotha play Swallows, Lerotholi Polytechnic face Roma Boys and Galaxy will play Van Rooyen United.

The quarter finals will be played on 20 and 21 May and the semi-finals will be played on the 27th.

Mantutle said the tournament would contribute to the growth of football in the lower divisions.

“These tournaments are important especially because football has been neglected at the lower level,” Mantutle said, adding, “We are very happy that this tournament is back and A division teams will have something to keep them busy so they won’t be resting for a long time as that makes players rust”.

He said Majantja would go all out to win this as well as the Champion of Champions’ title to end their season on a high note.

The winners will walk away M8000 richer, the losing finalists will pocket M6000 and the third placed team will get M5000.

Losing quarterfinalists will each receive M3500.

Mantutle however, said the lack of sponsors hindered the growth of football in the country.

“The issue of the corporate sector neglecting sports is very serious and needs to be addressed because we have to use our family resources to run teams.

The prize money for this tournament is nothing compared to what the teams spend just for preparations for the tournament. It is so sad,” he said.
