MASERU — A 28-year-old man from Ha Ts’iu doused his 27-year-old neighbour with paraffin before setting him on fire after he accused him of stealing his cell phone last Sunday.Police spokesman Masupha Masupha said villagers in Ha Ts’iu tried to put out the fire but the victim had already sustained serious burns.He was rushed to hospital but died of his wounds the following morning.
Masupha said the villagers then turned their anger on the suspect and tried to set him alight in a revenge attack. The man was only saved by the police who arrived at the scene as the angry mob was preparing to burn him.Masupha said the suspect told the police that the deceased stole his phone sometime ago and when he saw him he decided to revenge. The suspect is expected to appear in court this week to answer a charge of murder.Police investigations continue. Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man from Ha Mokhalinyane was arrested last week for allegedly sexually abusing an 18-year-old mentally challenged girl.Police suspect that the man had been abusing the victim, who is now pregnant, for a long time. The two are related. Masupha said the suspect will appear in court as soon as investigations are completed.
