Man jailed for sexually assaulting daughter

MASERU – A 50-year-old man was on Friday jailed for five years without an option of a fine for sexually assaulting his 16-year-old daughter.

This comes in the same week that a Semonkong man was jailed for 15 years for raping his 16-year-old daughter.

The 41-year-old man told the magistrate in his mitigation that he started having sex with his daughter because his wife was about to leave.

Khethisa Kopo, who stays in Naleli with his family, told the court that he had sexually assaulted his daughter because he was angry that she had come home late.

The court heard that Kopo inserted his finger into his daughter’s private parts.

He told a shocked court that he assaulted his daughter as punishment for coming home late.

But later he tried to duck jail by claiming that he had only “touched her”.

Magistrate Nkoti Mabula said he was shocked that Kopo could do such a thing.

“You give me a headache,” said Mabula after Kopo had pleaded for leniency during mitigation.

“Make me understand why you did this.”

The court heard that on September 30, last year Kopo got off his bed and started to sexually assault his daughter. The family shared one bedroom in Naleli.

In the morning the girl reported the matter to the mother who in turn reported to the police.

Kopo was immediately arrested.

After initially saying that he agreed with the prosecution’s evidence he later tried to duck jail by claiming that he had only “touched her”.

“I only asked her whether she was copying her mother’s ways of coming home late,” Kopo said.

The accused said both the mother and daughter were flirting with boys and came home late.

The court however rejected his explanation and slapped him with a five-year jail sentence.
